Since 1990, the top tennis players in the world have come to the clay courts of Umag, hoping to outlast the competition and raise the winner's trophy. In 2010, it was Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, who defeated Italy's Potito Starace 6-4, 6-4. Other recent winners include Russia's Nikolay Davydenko (2009), Spain's Fernando Verdasco (2008) and Spain's Carlos Moya (2007). Moya, the former world's No. 1 player, also won in 1996, then three straight times from 2001-03. His five titles are a Croatia Open Umag record.
The 2011 tournament is scheduled for July 21-31.
Stella Maris is the ideal spot for the tournament. The ATP stadium is located directly on the beach, so between matches you can take the children for a swim and bask in the sun. The stadium is also within walking distance to a number of Istraturist area hotels and Umag city centre.
