Sadly, that day never came. The woman died from pneumonia days before the lighthouse was completed. A distraught and heartbroken Count Metternich left and never returned as the lighthouse proved too much of a symbol of his lost love.
That tale – and Metternich's design – has persevered for nearly two centuries. The lighthouse is the oldest on the Adriatic Coast and a must-visit when in Istria. Located within steps of Istraturist's Pineta campsite, the lighthouse stands 36 metres high and its emitted light is visible for 32 kilometres. As the most western and northern lighthouse in Croatia, it is only nine (9) kilometres from the Umag city centre and within minutes of Slovenia and Italy.
The area on the Savudrija cape offers fabulous views of the Adriatic Sea, but the sight from the top of the lighthouse is even more impressive. A prior arrangement with the lighthouse keeper will enable you access to the apex.
Over the years, other amenities have been added to the lighthouse's vicinity. A fenced garden, numerous restaurants, public beaches and multiple sports facilities have been constructed to add to the allure of this picturesque area of Savudrija.
Gather your family and friends and visit the lighthouse in Savudrija for an unforgettable day in Istria.
