Istria should be experienced and looked upon as a harmonious tourist, historical, cultural and natural unit. Its coastal benefits of a healing sea air, Mediterranean breeze, the warmth of the sun and the incredibly clear sea are harmoniously completed by the indigenous green hills behind the coastal area. Istria represents an extraordinary combination of the Mediterranean, Roman and Venetian cultures with a rural, the Austrian Imperial and the Slavic cultures.
Savudrija
The westernmost settlement of Istria and Croatia is a small fishermen’s village only 5 kilometres distant from Umag. Savudrija is dominated by a 36 m high lighthouse built in 1818, which is the oldest lighthouse on the Adriatic Coast, as well. It is also well known for the production of Istrian smoked ham.
Motovun, Gračišće, Grožnjan, Završje, Momjan, Boljun, Dvigrad, Hum, Roč, Lindar
These beautiful places are mainly medieval and usually built on the remains of Histrian castles on hill tops in the inland of Istria. Owing to their rich history and tradition, picturesque ambiance and unforgettable panoramic views which include kilometres of Istrian landscapes, they are gladly visited by tourists and often host numerous events like film, music or dance festivals, theatre or literary gatherings.
Buje
In the history the town of Buje was called “the watchman of Istria” and today it has an interesting old town with Venetian palaces, while the Region of Buje is especially well-known for vineyards, wine cellars and agrotouristic farms. In autumn Buje is the venue of a popular “Festival of Grapes”.
Livade
This picturesque village, also called the world centre of truffles, is famous for its “Days of Truffles”, dedicated to the underground mushroom which is considered an aphrodisiac. In 2000 the biggest truffle in the world was found near Livade and entered in the Guinness Book of Records.
Pula
The biggest town on the Istrian peninsula with a rich history, the most striking being that of the Roman Empire with the famous Roman amphitheatre. Other notable sites of interest include the Triumphal Arch of Sergius from the 1st century BC, the Hercules’s Gate, the Twin Gate, Augustus' Temple, a small Roman theatre, the Forum ...
Brijuni Islands - national park
As the only national park on the Istrian peninsula, Brioni with their 14 islands represent the most interesting and indented group of islands in Istria. The abundance of flora originating from the very beginning of the 20th century, with its forms creates a unique green landscape, which is the habitat of numerous bird species, deer, mouflons and other big game, and everything is completed by numerous archaeological sites with Roman remains.
Venice
